Step 1: Fill in the Application for Initial Registration for Home Schooling (Form 1) available from the NESA website and return it to the email provided in the application form.
Step 2: Prepare for the interview with an Authorised Person (AP) from NESA
What you'll need for the NESA Authorised Person (AP) interview:
You will be asked to email the above documents to the AP when requested at the interview. A Certificate of Registration will be issued soon after.
Home School Programs provide everything you need to register and home school your child successfully.
No. You can not withdraw your child from school until your application for registration of home schooling is approved by NESA. You can present a copy of the Certificate of Registration to the school once approval is granted.
Yes. You can enrol your child at your local catchment area public school at any time. Enrolment at any other school is at the principal’s discretion.
You can home school a child from Kindergarten to Year 12. You can apply at any time of the year. Registration can be granted for 6, 12 or 24 months, depending on the discretion of the Authorised Person (AP) from NESA.
Home schooled children can receive a Certificate of Completion of Year 10 and may be eligible to sit HSC exams by self-tuition, and thereby receive an HSC Results Notice which is used to calculate their ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank). Home schooled children may be eligible for university entrance. They are not eligible for the ROSA (Record of School Achievement) nor the HSC (Higher School Certificate) as these are school based credentials.
The law in NSW permits a parent or legal guardian to take responsibility for educating their child. To do this, the child must be registered with NESA (NSW Education Standards Authority). You do not need formal educational requirements to home school your child.
You can pay using debit or credit card, as well as PayPal. PayPal enables payment over four equal monthly instalments - you will need to register with PayPal.
Yes. You receive a whole year Program for all six subjects required for home schooling.
K-6 Programs include six core subjects: English, Mathematics, Science and Technology, HSIE, PDHPE and Creative Arts.
Years 7-10 Programs include the core subjects: English, Mathematics, Science, History and/or Geography, plus two electives from: Food Technology, PDHPE, Music and Visual Arts. Upon purchase you receive a Subject Selection document which you can email back to us.
No. We provide you with a specially selected Booklist from Five Senses Education. These workbooks/textbooks are mapped to the NSW Australian curriculum – as are the syllabus points in the Program. Purchase of any books is optional. We also provide you with weblinks to free online learning resources.
No. This is a one-fits-all approach that doesn’t work with most children. You are free to mix and match your selection of learning resources. Use the books from our Booklist or use the weblinks to free learning resources. You can even use your own resources and create personalised activities and projects if you like.
No. You should aim to cover at least 80% of the syllabus. You can take your time on topics your child shows interest in and skim over topics that are not so appealing. As the Program is entirely editable and printable, you can adapt the Program to meet your child’s personal interests or learning needs.
The Program is integrated with record keeping so this becomes very easy. Simply write the activity used to cover a topic (in the Activity column) and your observations of any learning progress (in the Feedback/Progress column). The Program even allows you to insert photographs, voice recordings and other digital files as evidence of your child’s learning.
Record keeping should take about 20 minutes per week so you have ample time to dedicate to learning rather than reporting. We also give you sample responses to help you with your reporting.
There are no formal assessments required for home schooling. A few learning resources we make available to you give you the option to test your child’s understanding of topics by doing revision tests. We also provide you with a link to sample student work and grades so you can compare your child’s work with other standards produced.
NAPLAN is optional for home school students. If you would like your child to sit the NAPLAN tests, you will need to register. Contact the NESA Home Schooling Unit for more information.
No. You can begin the day whenever you’re ready. Home schooled children often complete their work within 2-4 hours per day. You can incorporate everyday activities with the learning program so there’s no need to stick to a strict timetable - unless this works for you.
We offer individual tuition services for primary and secondary subjects across all levels. Visit the Shop to make a booking. We can also connect you with small group English tuition services for Years 1-6 at a very reasonable cost.
Yes. You can contact us anytime.
You need a PC with Microsoft Office (2016 or later) or a subscription to Microsoft 365 ($10 per month). The Program does not run on Macs. Mac users can have 15 months access to an online OneNote version of the Program (this version does not have the full functionality of the desktop version).
